Anger and irritability are common symptoms that emerge with neurofeedback clients as they move out of depression and alpha asymmetry into beta asymmetry and the underlying anxiety that drove the depression. This response also carries over into sleep in the form of nightmares and vivid dreams. These are all temporary symptoms, but a unique time for counselors to uncover key emotional issue related to trauma. This typically occurs somewhere between 8 and 15 sessions depending on the client's profile. However, some clients who are exquisitely sensitive due to the intensity of their trauma or the instability of their physiology can easily be pushed too far too fast for their system to handle and often begin to show a strong reactivity to NFB early on. Shorter sessions combined with HRV often helps them to become more resilient.
